Seven and a bit months ago I predicted how the tables of the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship would turn out.
Now let’s see how I did.
To score, it’s easy enough, the difference between where they finished and where I predicted they’d finish is subtracted from my score. For example, if I said Bournemouth finished 3rd but they actually ended up finishing 14th, then that would be -11 off my score.
Now we’re gonna go through the leagues and see how I did.
WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Here’s what I predicted:-
1. Chelsea
2. Manchester United
3. Manchester City
4. Aston Villa
5. Arsenal
6. Liverpool
7. Brighton & Hove Albion
8. Tottenham Hotspur
9. Everton
10. Leicester City
11. West Ham United
12. Bristol City
Here’s what actually happened:-
1. Chelsea
2. Manchester City
3. Arsenal
4. Liverpool
5. Manchester United
6. Tottenham Hotspur
7. Aston Villa
8. Everton
9. Brighton & Hove Albion
10. Leicester City
11. West Ham United
12. Bristol City
My previous scores are thus:-
2019/20 — -28
2020/21 — -14
2021/22 — -18
2022/23 — -24
And this year my score is…
-16
Did I win?
My bottom three and champions paint me in a good light, but second down to eighth was erratic. Brighton so high? I actually stand by Villa toppling Arsenal but the former couldn’t keep their momentum from the season prior going. All in all, my second-best score, but I’ll still be aiming for those single-digits next time out.
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
Here’s what I predicted:-
1. Birmingham City
2. Southampton
3. Charlton Athletic
4. Crystal Palace
5. Reading
6. London City Lionesses
7. Durham
8. Lewes
9. Sheffield United
10. Sunderland
11. Blackburn Rovers
12. Watford
Here’s another version of what I predicted a few weeks into the season:-
1. Southampton
2. Birmingham City
3. Charlton Athletic
4. Crystal Palace
5. Durham
6. Reading
7. Blackburn Rovers
8. London City Lionesses
9. Sunderland
10. Sheffield United
11. Watford
12. Lewes
Here’s what actually happened:-
1. Crystal Palace
2. Charlton Athletic
3. Sunderland
4. Southampton
5. Birmingham City
6. Blackburn Rovers
7. Sheffield United
8. London City Lionesses
9. Durham
10. Reading
11. Lewes
12. Watford
My previous scores are thus:-
THERE AREN’T ANY! This is my first outing, and with a maximum score of something like -72, I’m aiming for the single-digits (I have not achieved this.)
And this year my score is…
-36
(or -30 if I’m cheating)
Did I win?
Exactly halfway between hell and nowhere. Slightly corrected myself but that’s to be expected when I wait until I’ve watched some games to make my prediction. Sunderland for sure did me over, and congratulations to them for doing so — you love to see it.
Roll on next year! Not for this though, this is just to satisfy the record-keeping boy in me. So it will be here, but the football is most what I’m looking forward to. I’ll see ye there.
Keep it streets ahead,
C.L.R.
