MANAGER: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)

There are three managers outside of the obvious two in with a shout of that spot on the bench — Unai Emery, Ange Postecoglou, and Gary O’Neil — all for defying expectations and limitations put in front of them from all over the football world. But it is going to be one of the top two in the hot-seat, and it’s not gonna be Pep. Arteta and his Arsenal side did everything you would need to do to win a Premier League title — except win a Premier League title. City had another rampage of a close season, but for sheer entertainment, longevity, and prowess, Mikel gets the nod this time. Especially to manage this insanely wingless line-up; don’t think I’ve ever seen a 3–2–1–2–2 before.

MANAGER: Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town)

There’s jobs that can be done with aplomb anywhere in this league, and Neil Harris returning to drag Millwall from their mire was one, while the resolute job Danny Röhl did with Sheffield Wednesday was another. Both Mark Robins at Coventry and Liam Rosenior at Hull were unlucky to miss out on lengthening their seasons (The Sky Blues in two regards), and Hull hopefully won’t rue the sacking of one of the most talented young managers in the game postseason. Daniel Farke was another in a line of coaches unable to drag Leeds over a self-extended finish line, but produced a tremendous style leading up to it, which leaves only one man really and that is the galvanising figure of Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town, producing some of the finest sport seen in Ipswich, or anywhere, for quite a wee bit.

MANAGER: John Mousinho (Portsmouth)

Who else but the man who finally leads Pompey up the divisions once more — Mr. Mousinho holds out ahead of Paul Warne and his intrepid Derby, Ian Evatt and a cutthroat Bolton, Des Buckingham’s salient Oxford, Michael Skubala’s haunting Lincoln, Richie Wellens’ assured Leyton Orient, Shaun Maloney’s resurgent Wigan, Jon Brady and his safe Northampton side, and Darrell Clarke for his close-but-no-cigar quest for survival for Cheltenham.

MANAGER: Nigel Clough (Mansfield Town)

One of those ‘offence is the best defence’ kinda sides needs a manager that suits just that. Phil Parkinson and Dave Challinor could certainly be argued, and as they continue to assemble their squads up the divisions, their respective legacies shall grow, but for right now, there’s a miniscule asterisk next to their accolades. Nigel Clough has a different asterisk, labelled ‘perseverance and dedication’ — which makes him the ideal candidate ahead of the likes of Pete Wild, Scott Lindsey, Simon Weaver, and Mike Williamson.

MANAGER: Paul Cook (Chesterfield)

One manager does stand head and shoulders above the rest if only for his dedication and leadership to get his team up as quick as he can. That is not to say that the efforts of Danny Searle and Chris Beech at the wrong end of the table should go without remark — a fine re-jigging. But even with Andy Woodman’s delivery, Dean Brennan’s power, Chris Millington’s drive, Andy Whing’s finesse, Rob Elliott’s calm, Phil Parkinson’s inspiration, Tommy Widdrington’s poise, and Kevin Maher’s absolute resolve, there is no doubt that Paul Cook is my man to lead this team to infinity and beyond.
