it’s MY FA CUP and i’ll cry if i want to

Last year, I did this.

My very own FA Cup.

It was very much like the FA Cup that exists for all of us to enjoy in the real world only there was no elitist favouritism being played to line the pockets of the already ultra-rich.
No, every single side started at the same time (more or less).

Everyone is all in.

Village green playing host to the champions of Europe.
That’s the stuff you want.
92 football league sides. 953 ‘non-league’ sides (yet they somehow all belong to a league, bar one, so there’s only one official non-league side).
All randomly drawn.
All random results (with adjusted odds).

Because why should the teams with the best chance of winning only play six games to win the cup, when some have to go through that many just to get in the competition proper. Then another eight to win the thing?

It ain’t fair and we tip the scales into everyone’s favour right here.

RULES

  • With 1045 teams, forty-two randomly drawn teams will compete in the First Round to chop our selection to a nice round 1024. From there, we are all set to have everyone entered, competing in a single elimination tournament.
  • From the Second Round, we will go from 1024 to 512, 512 to 256, 256 to 128, 128 to 64, 64 to 32, 32 to 16, 16 to 8, 8 to 4, 4 to 2, and 2 to 1.
  • Every club has received a seed number based on their current ranking, e.g. Manchester City are #1, Liverpool #2 etc. For clubs in the same rung, they’re just in whatever order I found ’em on Wikipedia.
  • From the Third Round on, seeding will be determined by the order they were drawn in the previous round. For example, if they were drawn in the first match of the Second Round and won, then they would be #1 seed for the Third Round.
  • To get a result, we’ll have a random number generator from 1 to 100, and in an even game, each side would have 50 numbers that would see them win. If a Premier League side were playing a team from the North West Counties League Premier Division, the numbers would be skewed in the top flight side’s favour.
  • It’s really annoying that there were twenty-one more teams than I needed. If there were 1024, we could get straight into it. But no, that’d be too easy. Not a rule, just a harsh fact.
  • If I’ve made any mistakes, such as duplicate teams being entered you can feck off and put up with it; I did my best to snuff ’em out and it took me ages, so if they’ve snuck in, they deserve to be in.

Right. Let’s get to it.

I’m growing to like it.

FIRST ROUND

As I mentioned, this round’ll see forty-two randomly drawn teams that’ll get us scratched down to a neat 1024. Here be the ties and results.

-

-

There it be. The twenty-one simulated winners of the first round will now advance to the second round, where they join what many would call a clusterfuck, but what I would call a mighty celebration of the beautiful game.
All played at the same time, on the same day.

SECOND ROUND

Are you ready for 512 match-ups? Yeah, I still am as well.
Just Ctrl+F if you just want your team, ya bastard.

Southampton 6—0 Wallingford Town
Last season’s beaten finalists the final of the 512 to advance.

Good heavens to Betsy’s bitter butter. That was a lot to take in.

Let’s have a swift recap.
Surely the biggest news is that champions of England, the mighty Manchester City, have tasted dust at the hands of Eastleigh from the National League. But they’re not the only Premier League side to fall at the first hurdle, with Wolves being bettered by Championship side Cardiff, and… That’s it. Eighteen top flight sides remain, but that does not mean it was a round devoid of upsets!
Preston, Dover, Carlisle, and many others have also been found weeping in the dressing room at full time, and doesn’t their sacrifice in defeat just make the rest of the tournament so much more interesting?

Well let’s see.

512 remain for Round Three, let’s get to it.

Premier League clubs taken out by those in the top five tiers, will we see those from further down stake their claim with a scalp?

Will Bill from down The Dog & Violin neck fourteen pints in an hour before playing centre-mid against Norwich?

Hope so.

I must say, those sides from the top four tiers seem to committing themselves terribly well. Unless they come up another side from the top four of course, but then we’re always gonna lose one so we can’t count them.

I did not witness one top flight side hit the bricks but there were notable upsets in the favour of Lincoln United as they saw off Nottingham Forest, Glossop North End as they submitted Stevenage, Slough and their highest point ever as a town by defeating Ipswich, and Cornard as they sent Wrexham back to Hollywood via North Wales. Not to mention Lakenheath joining in on the trend of beating Scunthorpe.

There does seem to be a few derbies setting themselves up… If the cards fall right of course… Could we see a devastating Redcar Rut? How about a Newcastle Hassle? Or a Mansfield Melee?

That’s the hope.

See ’em off, Cornard. That sounds like a rank in the army that was made up to appease somebody.

Even though plenty of big sides remain, plenty of lil’ fish do too. And in this final 256, they’re essentially in the top quarter of the tournament.

Which sounds good.

FOURTH ROUND

256 remain, roughly a quarter of the original field. Let’s half that mother.

I’m gonna wait on the derbies. I’m sure they’re just saving the Redcar Rut for the final.

Instead, this was a round of pulling rank. Those sides that had provided previous upsets were dealt with, put a stop to, neutralised. By and large.
But that didn’t stop Gillingham of League One taking out Premier League Arsenal! Or Charnock Richard seeing off Southport! Go on, Dick.

And then there’s Merthyr Town. A team known as The Martyrs knocked out Chelsea. And we thank them for their sacrifice.

Crystal Palace were the only other Prem side to go down, leaving us with 15, but I gots to give a sweet shout-out to Gedling Miners Welfare and their dismantling of Notts County. Always like to see the kids doing well.

Bit old to be miners aren’t they?

FIFTH ROUND

128 remain. Imagine what it means to some of these sides. Even a chance at the final 64… So close, yet still seven matches from the final. One step at a time…

You thought the big boys were gonna step it up here? Well the legs on them little boys have proven just as capable.

Prem sides have gone down, EFL sides have been laid to one side, those with the National League label have tasted defeat — the stories are numerous!

Man U have been done by Stanley, the Redcar derby’s off, Villa are down! That’s ‘Villa’ as in the defending champions, not Hanworth Villa, ‘cos they’ve just gone and taken down Walsall! Well on their way.

Also… Gedling have done it again… Dark horse? ‘Cos of the coal probably.

Let’s do the maths for the rest of the field.

Of the 92 Prem and EFL sides that began the tournament, 36 remain, meaning 56 have been done in.
Of those 36, nine are from the top flight (eleven down), thirteen are from the Championship (eleven down), ten are from League One (fourteen down), and four are from League Two (twenty down).

Of the remaining 28, just four are from the National League, or their North and South feeders, two from the National League proper and then two from the Southern denomination.
That leaves 24 from rung seven and below. Plenty of opportunity for a lil’ guy to prove that it ain’t punching above your weight if y’all weigh the same.

Nah mate, heroes this time.

SIXTH ROUND

We’re guaranteed new champions. Who’s gonna excite themselves through? And who’s gonna excite themselves right outta the competition?

-

Leyton Orient 8—0 Stockport County
Be wary about getting promoted, Stockport.

Glebe 0—2 Hartlepool United

St. Ives Town 0—5 West Ham United

FC Parson Drove 4—3 Hanworth Villa

Barnet 4—1 Langley

Lincoln City 1—3 Bolton Wanderers

Gillingham 1—5 Blackburn Rovers

Southampton 6—0 Bewdley Town

Wellingborough Whitworth 2—0 Derby County

Morecambe 7—0 Cornard United
I retract my previous statement about Cornard.

Canvey Island 1—2 Wycombe Wanderers

AFC Croydon Athletic 4—5 Marine

Middlesbrough 5—1 Millwall

Maidstone United 0—4 Dobwalls
I don’t even know where this is.

Gedling Miners Welfare 1—3 Shrewsbury Town

Hull City 3—3 Rochdale (P.S.O. — 1–3)

AND THEN, there were 32.

Let’s break it down.

5 Prem sides.
7 Champo sides.
8 League One sides.
3 League Two sides.
1 National League side.
1 Southern League Premier Division South side.
1 Northern Premier League Division One West side.
1 Eastern Counties League Division One North side.
1 North West Counties League Premier Division side.
3 Spartan South Midlands League Division One sides.
1 South West Peninsula League Premier Division West side.

There’s something in the water in the South Midlands. Then again, they are Spartans.

A quarter of the Prem sides remaining. As many League Two sides as the aforementioned Spartans.

Any victory now… For anyone… Has the potential to be the stuff of legend.
And the further down that pyramid you go, the more legendary you can be.

Get used to the fame, Irchester.

SEVENTH ROUND

Round of 32, let’s get it on.

Dobwalls 0—3 Reading
Only Reading know where it is.

Barnet 1—6 Stoke City

Hartlepool United 1—2 Bolton Wanderers

Tottenham Hotspur 2—3 Sheffield Wednesday
What even is the Premier League?

West Brom 5—2 Penn & Tylers Green

West Ham United 2—2 Marine (P.S.O. — 4–3)

Middlesbrough 6—2 Blackburn Rovers

Wellingborough Whitworth 2—3 Blackpool

Southampton 0—2 Leyton Orient
They wanted one step further, they got four steps back.

Hendon 1—3 Accrington Stanley

Rochdale 1—3 Morecambe

Doncaster Rovers 2—1 Irchester United
Doncaster never say die.

Liverpool 5—1 Leeds United
Dang.

And just like that, those that might be described as non-league were non-FA Cup.

2 Prem sides. Liverpool seeing off Leeds, but Spurs and last season’s runners-up Southampton seen off by League One’s Sheffield Wednesday and League Two’s Leyton Orient, respectively.
6 Champo sides. Swans, Potters, Royals, Baggies, Boro, Tangerines.

That’s half the field. Which means…

7 League One sides. The majority. Some Stanley, some Shrimps, some Shrews… Some Rovers, some Owls, some Wanderers, and some Chairboys.
1 League Two side. Only O’s remain.

A dream hangs twisting in the wind… Disturbed by unseen forces.
Those are the dreams; the dreams of these sixteen.

EIGHTH ROUND

-

Blackpool 0—2 Leyton Orient
Too many scalps. Proving truly that too much of anything is too much.

Liverpool 4—0 Sheffield Wednesday

West Brom 1—2 Bolton Wanderers

West Ham United 0—2 Stoke City

Doncaster Rovers 1—0 Reading

Swansea City 1—0 Wycombe Wanderers

Shrewsbury Town 6—1 Accrington Stanley

Morecambe 3—2 Middlesbrough

The Prem is halved. Down to a sole Scouse rep with three rounds to go.

The Champo sees four go down, with only two pressing on. One Swan still swimming, and one Potter still spinning.

League One is down to four, remaining the strength side despite three going dropping. Shrews, Shrimps, Rovers, and Wanderers persist.

And so do The O’s. League Two with as many reps as the top flight.

Much like last year, despite everyone starting at (pretty much) the same time, the finish contains those from the upper echelons of the pyramid. But not those from the tippity-top. I’ve no doubt Chelsea and Liverpool will deliver a cracker final, but what about seeing ’em play a ravenous Leyton Orient after a boisterous run? Could The Wanderers not redeem a defeat to The Potters? Shrimps could hop onto the Wembley barbie, Rovers could growl through, Swans can swaggeringly descend upon the capital, and they would all know…

That they’ve earned it.

But only two can dance the tango.

We go on.

We press.

QUARTER-FINALS

Nine rounds in now. Eight remain. Four berths. Wembley awaits.

-

Stoke City 2—1 Bolton Wanderers
A famous semi-final now quartered, and the same outcome if not the same result.

Morecambe 1—1 Doncaster Rovers (P.S.O. — 4–3)
Scrapping at the bottom in one life, living the high one in the other.

Leyton Orient 2—3 Liverpool
Chased ’em, but the shine remains.

Swansea City 1—5 Shrewsbury
They barely score, and yet 11 in two games later, they’ve got a semi-final at Wembley.

-

Stoke City. Morecambe. Liverpool. Shrewsbury.

League One maintains the majority stake, and the Prem holds on, but the Champo is halved.

Leyton Orient gave one hell of a show, but that League Two curtain has come down.

Liverpool might be aggrieved by more games, but now they can know that they earned it. Just as much as the other sides. And those other sides can know that they’ve stuck in a competition alongside the best.

Season scheduling wouldn’t benefit any of these teams at this point in the year, with each team playing between 50 and 55 roughly, but Liverpool would have a slight advantage in that arena that might still be taken away by jetlag.

What will the draw say though?

No strangers.

SEMI-FINALS

Tenth round and only four remain. What a journey. We’re at Wembley, but they all want two trips. Who’s gonna book another set of tickets?

-

Shrewsbury Town 2—4 Stoke City

Morecambe 1—3 Liverpool

It’s the pyramid that tells.

League One seen off by Champo.
League One seen off by Prem.

Both The Shrews and The Shrimps have won hearts, but the final is on. Of the Championship, Stoke City will clash with the Premier League’s Liverpool. One stands as giants unhindered by any artificial standing and one stands under the arches with a correctly earned final.

And one, will be taking my FA Cup home.

THE TALE OF THE TAPE.

POTTERS

1x Runner-Up
-
2nd Round — 7–0 vs. Potters Bar Town
3rd Round — 3–1 vs. Sleaford Town
4th Round — 3–1 vs. Sawbridgeworth Town
5th Round — 2–1 vs. Forest Green Rovers
6th Round — 3–1 vs. Tranmere Rovers
7th Round — 6–1 vs. Barnet
8th Round — 2–0 vs. West Ham
QF’s — 2–1 vs. Bolton Wanderers
SF’s —4–2 vs. Shrewsbury Town

Just the two clean sheets, but one came in the only other game in which they played top flight opposition. Add to that the fact that they’ve only conceded more than one in one game, and scored more than once in every game, and they look a good bet. Though that one game they conceded more than one in was the semi-final… And perhaps one game of top flight competition could prove too little.

REDS

7x Winners, 7x Runner-Up
-
2nd Round — 5–3 vs. Mulbarton Wanderers
3rd Round — 4–1 vs. Barnton
4th Round — 2–0 vs. AFC Sudbury
5th Round — 3–1 vs. Sandbach United
6th Round —3–1 vs. Everton
7th Round — 5–1 vs. Leeds United
8th Round — 4–0 vs. Sheffield Wednesday
QF’s — 3–2 vs. Leyton Orient
SF’s — 3–1 vs. Morecambe

Like their opponents, two clean sheets in nine, but also like their opponents, scored more than once in every game. As we look closer, we see little differences though… Three conceded in one game against non-league opposition is a downside, but more experience against Prem opponents, including a derby, is an upside.

The scales are weighted ever so finely, the suits have been purchased, and the journeys made. They have solved the riddle, crossed the bridge, and ducked the deadly traps, now… The holy grail awaits.

FINAL

Stoke City 1—5 Liverpool

Just as Villa bagged their eighth last year, Liverpool have done so this.

Lemme tell ya, it was back and forth, moreso than it looked, and when Stoke took the lead through Lewis Baker after a well-worked move and twenty minutes of neat pressure, there were a lot of doubts from that Liverpool side. Firmino would douse those with a double before half-time, and although Stoke would continue to press, hitting the post five times in the second-half, Liverpool would stand resolute, and a Sadio Mane brace as well as a Curtis Jones driller made a competitive game look more one-sided than it was.

This could be reality, but in reality, there will always be a voice telling me that they didn’t earn it. In this reality, I can say congratulations to Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool for winning this fictional tournament.

Not your, but My FA Cup winners, LIVERPOOL.

Woop. There it is.

I forgot how long this took me last year.
It was only once I got all the seeds written out and made the first three matches that it dawned on me how long it was gonna take, so once again, I understand why the FA might not wanna do this, but maybe they have quicker ways around things than I do.

It does make me think ‘was it worth it’?

My answer is probably no, but then I picture it in real life.
Everyone level. The communist competition of football. I imagine those Merthyr Town players as old men telling their kids how they outplayed the champions of Europe. Cole Stockton holding court in the pub as he tells of the time he was one kick away from an FA Cup Final.
I imagine the country raising a pint for Gedling Miners Welfare! Or Irchester, or desiring the Redcar Derby like no-one ever has before, maybe even buying a ticket and rocking up to see those sides in the hope that it one day might happen.

Two Prem sides were left in the round of sixteen. When does that happen? Sure, the rest were EFL sides, but that’s just the roll of the dice. Goliath remains the same a lot of the time, David is often recast — and we get right behind him each time.
The playing field is levelled that little bit more, and it’s a little bit more that could help a lot. Wellingborough Whitworth were two games away from Wembley. Magic.

I mean, I could’ve turned it right around; have Prem sides play in the First Round, then add in Championship sides for Round Two, and so on, and so on, until the 26th Round sees the Stroud and District League join the fray.

Maybe that’s another tournament for another day. Now for a copy-paste section from last year because it tracks.

‘Is My FA Cup realistic?

Nah, probably not. As I mentioned, I ain’t sure why it’s not, probably somet with money, but it’s not realistic.

I was adding this up in my head.
In a regular season, Accrington Stanley of League One will play an average of 57 games (46 league games, 5 EFL Trophy games, 2 EFL Cup games, and 4 FA Cup games), sometimes more, sometimes less, but that’s their average.
Liverpool, a club worth over 100 times as much, with players being paid 100 times more will play an average of 54 games (38 league, 3 EFL Cup, 3 FA Cup, 10 Champions League).
Even if Liverpool reach the finals of all their tournaments, they play 63.
Even if Accrington get knocked out in the first round of everything, they play 51.

With all their resources, the Premier League champions, at most, will have to play 12 more games than Accrington Stanley.
On average, Stanley, just up the road, are playing more.
And that’s more and more the further down the pyramid you go.

Makes sense right? The fewer your resources, the more you need to use them.

So why don’t we give Stanley a break? You might have an injury crisis, Jürgen, and you might have to fly about a bit more, but somet tells me you got what you need to deal with it. And if you don’t, you probably should.

So yeah, let’s give Stanley a break, but let’s give ’em all a break. Burscough, AFC Totten, Harleston Town, Newent Town, Cheshunt, Okehampton Argyle, and of course, Mousehole and Cheddar. All of ‘em.

Let’s give them lot a bigger slice of the pie, huh?
And let’s not stop at the tenth rung. School teams, five-a-sides, table football players, darts teams, or just you and your mates can enter. Make it an invitational, make it everyone’s cup.

If it’s for grassroots, it’s for the people.

But that’s just my FA Cup, and that’s how I’d do it.’

Yeah, it still tracks.

Keep it streets ahead,
